Welcome!

Welcome!!! My name is Jocelyn. I’m an undergraduate with the National University of Singapore, School of Computing, majoring in Communications and Media and am in my fourth year. I study mostly about Human Computer Interaction and design in school, but I also dabble in 3D animation and game development. I’m graduating in December this year, and am excited about what the future holds for me!

This is an online blog that I’ve set up to display work for easier viewing by the general public. Since I am also using this to advertise myself to prospective employers, I have also included more about what I did in school, what I learnt and reaped from my experiences in school, and the skills that I picked up in school.

Computing-wise (notable modules):

NM2208 Principles of Visual Communications

We studied various aspects of graphic design and visual communication, and were given design assignments with different themes in which we apply the new things that we learnt in lecture, and are then asked to present our work to the class for constructive critique. For the final project, each team is to come up with a children’s storybook, which will encompass all design principles which we have learnt over the semester. A portfolio can be found here on the class blog that each student has to set up: http://wawawatermelonnm2208.wordpress.com/

CS3240 Human Computer Interaction

We studied about various principles of HCI design, as well as methods and importance of user testing and evaluation, which ended in a mini flash project.

CS3241 Computer Graphics

We learned how to use OpenGL to explore how to construct graphics using Visual Basic and C++, and also a ton of math equations. We also learned more about the graphics pipeline, and other things like Bezier patches and so on.

CS4342 3D Animation and Modeling

A very hardcore module in which we learnt how to model, rig, and animate in Maya, but everything is done using MEL(Maya Expression Language) and submission of our project and assignments consists of only one single .mel file! We also learnt about scene graphs, nodes, and various things related to 3D modeling, especially of those related to Maya.

CS4213 Game Development

We studied game theory, algorithms (such as A* path-finding), fuzzy logic, as well as game design, and also completed assignments using Visual Studio C++ coupled with Ogre Game Engine to animate avatars which would then be used to engage in battle with other students’ avatars.

CS3248 Design of Interactive Systems

User testing

CS4201 and CS4202 Interactive Systems Project

This is an 8MC(modular credit) module which spans through two semesters. We are required to design and implement an application using the Microsoft Kinect. Our group came up with the idea of an intelligent billboard which can bring interactive advertising to the masses which uses intuitive body gestures using the Kinect. The main focus of the module was on user testing and evaluation, and interface and interaction design. We are bringing our project to the public by implementing an interactive display that promotes School of Computing during the NUS Open House at the computing booth. It allows potential freshmen to play a mini game and take a free photo with various majors with custom backgrounds using the Kinect. The photo will be printed out and more information about SoC will be included at the back of the photo.

Outside of my major:

Japanese Language under the Centre of Language Studies (CLS)

I pursued my interest in the Japanese language by taking all 6 Japanese Language modules available to NUS students, which covers syllabus from JLPT N5 to N2.

Under the CLS, as well as the Japanese Studies Society (JSS), I was given many opportunities to engage in activities and exchange with native Japanese.

Under the CLS, Japanese language students were given the chance to host students from local Japanese institutes, like the Japanese Primary School and Waseda Shibuya Senior High School. We engaged in basic conversation and also brought the students around NUS.

I volunteered to be a tour guide for a day to a total of 4 batches of university students from Okinawa. We would then hold cultural exchange sessions on the go while bringing our guests around the island for sightseeing and shopping, learn about the differences and similarities between our countries, and at the same time, learn more about our little red dot with them. You will be surprised at how much we don’t yet know about our own homeland! When I am free, I also do paid tour guide assignments under the Brother and Sister Programme by ths JSS.

Ethelontêr VIII

Theme: Odyssey

Ethelontêr is the annual social camp organised by the NUS Students’ Community Service Club to introduce and expose incoming freshmen and existing undergraduates to the club and its activites. It is also our main source of fresh volunteers and members who would hopefully continue and help out in our existing projects and regular volunteering programmes.

The theme that we came up with for  Ethelontêr VIII (in its eighth year in 2011) is Odyssey. We likened the joining of freshmen to pirates who joined a new ship and are ready to step out on a journey to a whole new world full of adventure, and friendship.

There were a total of six groups. We named each group after a famous ship in history and gave them meanings that symbolize what we wished to see in our fresh new recruits.

These are the six groups, and their names, logos and descriptions are as follows:

Epimoni

Stuck in ice for two years, Epimoni was finally freed with controlled explosives. They represent perseverance in the flesh and their undying spirit ensures that they never stop trying. If even ice in Antarctica can’t stop them, nothing else will! (Trait: perseverance)

Polaris

Polaris was one of the strongest wooden ships ever built. Muscle is their second name, but they use more than pure brute force to achieve their aims. If you need a sense of security, Polaris is the group you are looking for! (Trait: strength)

Senshi

Senshi, Japanese for warrior, was the first iron-hulled, armour-plated warship. Nothing daunts them and they face every challenge ahead with relish. Their fearsome fighting spirit ensures that once the goal is set, there is no stopping Senshi! (Trait: fighting spirit)

Moshulu

The ship Moshulu helped ship coal, nitrate, coal, and coke around the world, symbolizing the diligence of Moshulueans. Hardworking by nature, they are willing to put in maximum effort to achieve their goals. If you are not afraid of hardship, Moshulu is the way to go! (Trait: diligence)

Nautilus

The world’s first nuclear powered submarine, Nautilus embodies the spirit of innovation. Always the pioneer, they are never afraid to challenge the status quo or take risks. With a creative mind and a lack of fear, they are Nautilus! (Trait: innovation)

Yamato

Yamato, along with her sister ship, Musashi, were the largest and most powerful battleships ever built. In charge of protecting Japanese waters during WWII, they epitomize the phrase “strength in numbers”. When you need someone to count on in times of need, Yamato will be the group to power you forward! (Trait: support)

We were also to come up with a forms of publicity material to hand out during the NUS Open House to advertise our camp to all potential freshmen. This year, we decided to try something new other than flyers and calendar cards and decided on a paper fan since it would be hot and stuffy during the open house due to the large crowds and poor ventilation at the venue itself. Due to budget constraints, we decided to print it out and cut out the fans by hand.

I was also in charge of the website, and have attached some screenshots of how it looked like:

This is the t-shirt designs for the freshmen and seniors. Each group has their own t-shirt but they all follow this template. The print is in black and white because we had a tight budget:

This is the OC(Organizing Committee) shirt. All OC members’ names are printed on the back:

This is the camp booklet which is given out to freshmen on the first day of the camp to inform them of the various programmes lined up for them, and other important information:

There are also other graphic illustrations I did for this camp, like the one below. It was for a programme that introduced the various projects and regular volunteering programmes to the freshmen, and they requested for a map that had our projects and volunteering programmes depicted as islands on it. The main idea was to let them know that our projects are split into three categories, RVP(regular volunteering programmes), SP(Special Projects), and XP(eXternal Projects). So here it is!
